Wandering in the Clouds

The clouds are our constant companions as we move through life, regardless of where we are – these fleeting figures that create changing choreographies in the sky and simultaneously distribute water and protect us from the sun.

CUMULUS turns our world upside down and lets us wander among the clouds. With sound, handheld mirrors, and fog cannons, the artists take us on a legendary walk through the secrets of the sky. The walk unites two worlds we experience as separate. Humans on earth, and clouds in the sky. In reality, we are one. When we breathe in, we absorb the atmosphere deeply into our body. When we breathe out, our exhalation becomes part of the clouds. Once, it was to gaze at clouds a harmless, poetic pleasure – a feeling of slowness and connecting with something greater. We sought to understand clouds and weather through myths, legends, and fairy tales. But how is it to gaze at the sky in a time when the atmosphere is unstable, and the weather is a threat?

The artists Andrea Gunnlaugsdóttir and Claudia Lomoschitz look up at the sky with political and feminist glasses. The clouds that give body to the weather and air are threatened by global warming. Research points out that a warmer earth will lead to fewer natural clouds. Clouds have become something we create. Toxic clouds, chemical clouds, data clouds. Have the clouds long tried to tell us something we have overlooked? Let us listen, observe, and take a walk through the clouds for a while.
